As a means of raising awareness on issues of social justice and environmental care, students from the Edmund Rice Society of St Patrick’s College in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, recently conducted their annual public speaking competition, this year on the topics of poverty alleviation, water conservation and vandalism.

Students from ten schools and representatives from concerned organisations participated in what proved to be a successful event.

Noting that poverty is a global concern with poverty alleviation being targeted as one of Millennium Development goals, speakers highlighted corruption, lack of access to education, unemployment, and inequality in the distribution of resources.

Vandalism and theft of public infrastructure is a significant concern in Zimbabwe, with public property losses amounting to more than five million dollars annually.

The change in climate experienced in Bulawayo in the past few years have created semi-arid conditions and an urgent need to conserve water supplies.
